The Sound of Cinema
Saturday at 5PM on WSCL 89.5

Delmarva Public Media is thrilled to announce the start of a new local program for WSCL 89.5 - “The Sound of Cinema with Nathan Hartman.”

Hosted and produced by Salisbury University communication professor Nathan Hartman, the program showcases the work of film composers with Hartman providing commentary and context.

  • The most amazing thing about filmmaking is that a film ever gets made. Think of it. Dozens, if not hundreds, of crew members have to work together on a budget and timetable to produce something that is probably the opposite of their daily grind - a breezy, fun experience. There can be a lot of high drama in making drama, and sometimes movies have turned the camera around to show just how the sausage gets made and how messy it can get.Today on the show, we’re going to listen to scores from films that have actors seeking their spotlight, screenwriters breaking down, studio executives out on the hustle, and directors trying just to hold it all together.
  • If film composing has a first family, it’s The Newmans. Brothers Alfred, Lionel, and A-Meal all made their mark on Hollywood and left big shoes to fill for the Newmans who came after, including Thomas, David, Randy, and Joey.Today, we’re climbing around the Newman family tree and taking a listen as the family puts their mark on classic cinema, generational favorites, and groundbreaking animation.
  • It’s for your years only as we listen to the scores from James Bond scores beyond the work of series stalwart John Barry. We’ll take on the Roger Moore era, as 007 meets the fifth Beatle, listen to selections from the likes of Bill Conti and Hans Zimmer, and marvel at composer David Arnold’s run composing for both the Pierce Bronson and Daniel Craig eras of the world’s favorite spy.
  • We’re going level by level through the history of video game adaptations to film. We’ll explore two versions of the Mushroom Kingdom, prepare for Mortal Kombat, and Craft are way to victory against some piglins.
  • We’re strapping in and taking a few horsepowered laps around the musical history of the racing film. We’ll race through several years of Le Mon, handle the turns of a podracer in the Boonta Eve Classic, and get behind the wheel of both an F1 car and a self-driving Love Bug.
  • We’re witnessing the terrifying yet awe-inspiring anger of Mother Nature as we explore the scores of disaster films. We’ll absolutely flip for the Poseidon Adventure, escape a towering inferno, climb Dante’s peak, and hang on for dear life against the finger of god.
  • Let’s take a ride on Falkor in a Neverending Story, compete in the Triwizard Tournament, and steal from the gold-hoarding Smaug as we take a look at films featuring those fire-breathing friends and foes - dragons.
  • Let’s take off in a Mini Cooper for The Italian Job, steal a priceless painting with Thomas Crown, and crack open a Vegas vault with Ocean’s Eleven as we listen to the scores from great heist films.
  • We’re exploring the musical life of the great Henry Mancini. We’ll catch the Pink Panther, have Breakfast at Tiffany’s, head out on a Great Race, and so much more. One might say this episode is a perfect 10.
  • The classic era of Disney animation may be remembered for its songs, but the scores are just as magical. This episode, we’ll meet a few princesses, take flight with Dumbo and Peter Pan, and float down a lazy river through the jungle.
