Wilmington Mayor: White Nationalist Retweet "Inadvertent"

official photo

Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki found himself facing controversy this St. Patrick’s Day weekend when his office retweeted an offensive trope that is popular among white nationalists.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that the Mayor’s office says the retweet was “inadvertent” making it appear that he had share its message.

The tweet was deleted after questions were raised by the News Journal.

The rightwing Tweet said that the Irish had come to America looking for a better life, worked hard but were called privileged and blamed for slavery by “beta male, soy drinking hypocrites and depressed feminists”.

In a statement on Monday John Rago in the Mayor’s communications office told the paper that someone not associated with the mayor’s office intentionally set out to connect the mayor to the offensive post.

He said the office retweeted the original tweet without being aware of the offensive post was attached.
