The White Marlin Open Begins in Ocean City

White Marlin Open website

Ocean City has been gearing up for the start this week of the 44th annual White Marlin Open.

The tournament has gotten national interest with the disqualification of Philip Heasley who was initially awarded nearly $3 million.

That was rescinded after tournament organizers decided he had violated competition rules by leaving the dock earlier than allowed.

Heasley eventually lost in federal district court but has said he would appeal.

The tournament is worth $4 million this year as boats return to the ocean waters.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that there are some changes including making any boat less than 40 feet being able to participate and adding the heaviest fish category regardless of type.
