Salisbury Gets $1 Million Grant for More Firefighters

The Salisbury Fire Department will get $1 million in federal funding to hire 12 more firefighters.

The grant comes from the US Department of Homeland Security.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that because of the economy over the last four years two of the city’s three stations have not been able to hire the firefighters necessary for a full staff.

Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md) said with threats ranging from natural disasters to possible terrorist threats…communities cannot shoulder the burden alone.

Acting Chief Richard Hoppes said he was not ready to comment but plans to hold a news conference with Mayor Jim Ireton on the latest news.
