China Lifts Poultry Ban, Good News for Delmarva Producers

creative commons

China is lifting its ban on imported poultry meat from the United States.

Beijing imposed the ban in 2015 because of an outbreak of avian influenza in December of the previous year.

WBOC reports that this was welcome news for the poultry industry on Delmarva…which produced 4.3 billion pounds of chicken last year.

That amounted to $3.1 billion in revenue.

The television station reports Delaware Agriculture Secretary Michael Scuse said that this action would help some 734 family poultry farms in the state.

Meanwhile, Virginia’s two Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine issued a statement describing the Chinese move as great news for the state’s poultry producers.

U.S. officials say it is estimated that the country’s poultry industry will be able to export more than $1 billion to China each year.
