The Georgetown Historical Society will not be getting a state grant of $14-thousand this year.

The reason: The Confederate battle flag that has flown over its Marvel Museum property for more than a decade.

WBOC reports that lawmakers last month pulled the funding on the last day of the legislative session after civil rights groups asked that the monument either be removed or end the funding.

State Senator Trey Paradee (D) from Dover asked that the funds be stripped given that the flag has become a symbol adopted by hate groups.

Debbie Jones the organization’s vice president told the television station that this will hurt the financing for the group’s efforts to maintain historic buildings.
