Chincoteague is in the running for the Best Coastal Small Town in USA Today’s 2019 10 Best Readers’ Choice Travel Awards.

With a population of around 29-hundred the Salisbury Daily Times reports that it was ranked Number 1 in votes as of Tuesday afternoon.

Each town must have less than 25-thousand residents.

The nominations were determined by a panel of five travel experts with the final ranking decided by popular vote.

Chincoteague is described by the contest as a resort that offers “delightful seclusion” with uncrowded beaches, an array of amenities and the famed pony herds of Assateague Island.

The Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce is encouraging residents, friends and visitors to vote daily for the resort.
