PIKESVILLE, Md. (AP) - Troopers in Maryland arrested 89 people on drunken driving charges and issued thousands of citations and warning over the St. Patrick's Day holiday weekend.

Maryland State Police announced the outcome of the weekend's saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints across the state on Monday.

From Saturday through Monday, officials say troopers arrested 89 people for driving under the influence and issued 999 speeding citations. Police say troopers conducted 5,843 traffic stops and issued 3,039 additional citations and 3,933 warnings. State police also investigated 141 crashes, including three fatal crashes.

Police say impaired driving saturation patrol funds from the Department of Transportation's Highway Safety Office supported the additional enforcement. The department says 558 people died on Maryland's roads in 2017 and about one-third of those deaths involved impaired driving.
