H2-B Visas and Crab Picker Shortage on Delmarva

Don Rush

At least three crab houses in Dorchester County are looking for crab pickers.

The shortage is the result of the decision by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to issue H2-B worker visas through a lottery system.

WBOC reports that has left Russel Hall Seafood with no Mexican crab pickers.

Owner Harry Phillips told the television station that right now it’s a struggle and that it is expected to get tougher as more crabs come in this fall.

Congressman Andy Harris had said he would try to get more visas by early August.

WBOC reports that it reached out the Eastern Shore Republican but did not hear back from his office.
