Wicomico County May Finally Get an Ice Hockey Team

It looks like ice hockey will be coming to the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center – perhaps as soon as October of 2018.

County Executive Bob Culver made the announcement today.

He was joined by Jim Calpin who represents investors who buy minor league sports teams.

The announcement comes after a report that found bringing a hockey team to Worcester County looked problematic.

Culver said that Wicomico County is different.

“We’ve always talked about having a hockey team. And, like I say, there was going to be a new arena in the Berlin area. And that was going to be a hundred million dollars. They just didn’t think it wouldn’t carry itself. Now we already have a hundred million facility here.”

But is there enough interest?

Said one member of the ice hockey team on the Salisbury University campus, “You would not believe the amount of hockey jerseys you see when you walk around campus.”

Local officials say they are look at two leagues that could come to Wicomico County -- the Southern Professional Hockey League and the East Coast Hockey League.
