RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia state senators are pushing to keep secret any communications they had with outside consultants as part of an ongoing legal battle over redistricting.
The Daily Press reports that a bipartisan group of senators want the Virginia Supreme Court to rule on whether lawmakers have to disclose communications with consultants.
An outside group pushing for non-partisan redistricting filed a lawsuit last year challenging the current makeup of some House and Senate districts. As part of the lawsuit, the group wants lawmakers to hand over communications between third parties who helped lawmakers draw the districts.
Virginia's 2011 redistricting effort has come under fire from critics who say the lines were unfairly drawn to favor incumbents, and outside groups have challenged the current district boundaries in both state and federal court.
