A sinkhole has developed on the eastbound lane of Route 90 at St. Martin River Bridge.
The Worcester County sheriff’s Office says that the hole was first reported at 12:50 p.m. yesterday afternoon.
The State Highway Administration has laid a steel plate over the hole until it can be permanently patched.
SHA spokesman Charlie Gischlar told the Salisbury Daily Times that sinkholes near the water are not uncommon.
He said the constant rising tides produce a great deal of erosion over time.
