Delegate Rudy Cane (D-Dorchester)  is retiring after serving in Maryland’s House of Delegates since 1999.

That leaves the Wicomico County Council member Sheree Sample-Hughes as the only candidate in the race for District 37 A.

His decision comes during a temporary absence from the legislative session after getting surgery for issues involving the nerves in his hand an elbow.

Initially, Cane had told Sample-Hughes to run but then after being told by his doctors that he was fit to campaign entered the race for another four year term.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that Cane did not want to issue a statement or answer questions about his withdrawal.

Sample-Hughes says even though she is the only candidate in the race she will continue to campaign.
