Newark Swears In New Mayor

facebook

BALTIMORE (AP) - A new mayor has taken office in Newark.

Polly Sierer was sworn in Tuesday following a contested election. She replaces Vance A. Funk III, who was elected in 2004.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports that the 55-year-old Sierer said her election represents an opportunity to "begin some progress and some healing."

A group of citizens including one of her opponents, Amy Roe, had urged state elections officials to postpone certification of last week's election results to investigate potential violations of the city's election code.

Delaware Election Commissioner Elaine Manlove said she saw no reason to delay Sierer's swearing-in and didn't find anything that would have changed the outcome of the election.

The mayor serves a three-year term and presides over council meetings.
