DOVER, Del. (AP) — Republican state lawmakers are asking Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden to investigate whether an inmate work program violated state law.
Reps. Greg Lavelle and Deborah Hudson wrote to Biden on Thursday expressing concerns about a day labor program in Sussex County.
The letter was sent after the U.S. Attorney for Delaware declined a similar request by state GOP Chairman John Sigler for an investigation, saying Sigler should contact the FBI with any concerns.
Problems with the program surfaced earlier this year after two inmates were hired by the father-in-law of Democratic Rep. John Atkins. Following a subsequent Freedom of Information Act request by a newspaper reporter, DOC officials launched an internal investigation after discovering that there were virtually no records for the program's last 23 years of operations.
