Maryland lawmakers overrode the governor’s veto of a measure that would oversee the management of the state’s oysters.
The legislation would use environmental activists, scientists, watermen and seafood sellers along with an independent mediator that would oversee efforts to increase the oyster population.
WBOC reports that the Maryland Department of Natural Resources would then work with an advisory commission and the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Studies.
They would put together a consensus for how to improve the oyster population.
While environmentalists applauded the override the state’s Natural Resources Secretary Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio said that the meausre would only delay Maryland’s ability to enhance the state-managed oyster sanctuaries.
Other Veto Overrides
Maryland lawmakers overrode a number of other vetoes.
One measure would abolish the state’s Handgun Permit Review Board which evaluate appeals by those who have been denied permits.
The Democratic majorities also over the veto of bill the bars employers with 15 or more full-time workers from requiring a job applicant to disclose a criminal record before the first person interview.
Another measure would expand the exemption of undocumented immigrants from paying out-of-state tuition.
