Delaware State Police say a trooper shot and killed an armed man who was threatening suicide in Lewes.

WBOC reports that authorities say that the man put twice put a handgun on the ground but refused to comply with an order not to pick it up again.

Police say it was at that point that the Trooper fired his weapon hitting the man in the upper torso.

Police began medical assistance but the man was pronounced dead at Beebe Hospital.

The trooper has been placed on administrative leave and has been with the state police for the last five years.

Identification of the man has not been released pending the notification of kin.
