Maryland Legislature Approves Five Oyster Sanctuaries

Don Rush

Maryland lawmakers have approved five permanent oyster sanctuaries.

The measure covers Harris Creek, the Little Choptank River, the Tred Avon River, the St. Mary’s River and the Manokin River.

WBOC reports that supporters say the sanctuaries are important to ensuring the state’s oyster population.

Opponents of the bill said that they would harm the seafood industry.

The bill now moves to Governor Larry Hogan’s desk where opponents hope he will veto the bill.
