There will be federal funding to boost the broadband capabilities on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine announced that Eastern Shore Communications LLC will be receiving nearly $1.8 million to build a broadband fiber fixed-wireless high-speed network.

WBOC reports that it will be designed to reach residents from Chincoteague and Wallops Island down to Virginia Beach and Norfolk.

Meanwhile, the Scott County Telephone Cooperative will get another $3 million to build a fiber-to-the-home broadband system to provide internet access to some 554 homes and 20 businesses.

Warner and Kaine issued a statement saying that the federal money will be important in bringing economic growth to the region.
