Church Settlement in Murder of Nicole Bennett

Delaware Law Enforcement

The Bay Shore Community Church near Gumboro has agreed to pay $467-thousand as part of a settlement with the family in the murder of Nicole Bennett three years ago.

The suit claimed that the church allowed her accused killer Matthew Burton to work at the church even though it had found out he had been convicted of a sex offense against a child in 2004 and failed to inform Bennett about his past.

Burton was arrested weeks later and fought extradition from Maryland where local prosecutors wanted to try him.

He was finally extradited earlier this year to Delaware where he could face the death penalty if convicted.
