In Somerset County residents can receive free training on how to administer the drug Narcan for an overdose from an opioid.

It is part of a partnership with the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to help people if emergency medical services are not immediately at hand.

Narcon can be used to quickly restore the breathing of someone who has overdosed on heroin or certain prescriptions medications such as oxycodone.

WBOC reports that those taking the training would probably be family members or friends of people with a drug problem.

The television station says that last year around 100 people were trained in the use of Narcan and that there were reports of three instances of the drug being administered.
