U.S. Coast Guard Seal

CAPE CHARLES, Va. (AP) - The search for an 8-year-old boy who went missing off Cape Charles Beach has turned to a recovery effort.

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission said the search turned to a recovery mission on Monday morning. Equipment was pulled from the water Monday night. It was to be redeployed Tuesday.

Media outlets report the boy was last see swimming at the beach on Sunday. The boy's grandmother says his family is from New Jersey and was visiting relatives in Chesapeake.

The Coast Guard, the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, Cape Charles police, beach lifeguards and bystanders searched for several hours without finding him.

Authorities are now using side-scan sonar, boats and an airplane as part of the recovery effort.
