$86,000 in Ocean Downs Casino Related Campaign Contributions

Washington (AP) - Maryland’s ban on political contributions by casino owners hasn’t stopped one of them from donating tens of thousands of dollars to candidates.

The Washington Post reports that 11 companies owned or affiliated with William Rickman Jr., who owns the Ocean Downs casino on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, have contributed more than $86,000 to state candidates since the ban took effect in 2012.

The newspaper says Rickman, who also owns the Delaware Park casino in Delaware, declined repeated requests for comment.

Rickman hasn’t donated money as an individual. The donations instead were made through Rickman companies that own the Oceans Downs racetrack and provide food and beverage service at the track.

The Post reports other companies associated with the Rickman family also have contributed to candidates.
