Wilmington Council Member Owes More Than $30,000 in Back Federal Taxes

wilmington.de.us

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - New Castle County records show Wilmington Councilman Michael Brown Sr. owes more than $30,000 in federal income taxes.

The Wilmington News Journalreports that liens filed in 2011 with the county recorder of deeds show Brown and his ex-wife failed to pay $31,089.76 from 2004 to 2008. All were still outstanding this week.

Brown, a member of the committee that has oversight over the city's budget, says the debt is being paid as part of a bankruptcy filing that stemmed from his divorce and he was unemployed for two-and-a-half years after a 2005 surgery.  He says his personal finances are separate from his public career.

Brown has said he is not running for re-election after he completes his third term, which runs through 2016.
