Newark Mayor: "Doesn't Feel Welcome Anymore"

Newark Website

Newark Mayor Vance Funk III has put his home up for sale, saying he just doesn’t feel welcome anymore.

After nearly a decade in office the 70-year old Funk is stepping down at the end of September just four months into his fourth term.

He cited frustration and stress-related health problems as a result of a campaign by local residents who opposed a plan to bring a Wawa gas station to South Main Street.

Nearby neighbors put up yard signs reading, “No More Gas Pumps.”

The outgoing mayor says he is still getting calls about the proposal…even though he is leaving office.

The Wawa plan has not been formally submitted to the city but there are concerns that range from traffic and light pollution to competition for local businesses.
