Audit of Sussex County Prison After Incident With Lawmaker

Carl Danberg, Biopic

Security lapses may be the most significant issue to arise from a lengthy visit by state Representative John Atkins with his 10-year old son to the Sussex Correctional Institution in Georgetown.

A video was obtained by the Wilmington News Journal which shows Atkins and his young son…walking unescorted in the booking and receiving area at the facility in February of 2011.

During their visit there was a panic alarm that required officers to rush to the assistance of another.

In addition, the two passed by a room with an open door where an inmate was undergoing a medical screening.

Delaware Department of Correction Commissioner Carl Danberg said yesterday there will be an audit of the procedures at the Sussex prison with a team of state corrections officials and out-of-state consultants.

Arthur Leonardo, the former executive director of the North American Association of Wardens and Superintendents, told the paper that there are rules for visitors so that they can be protected.
