Holy Week and Passover programming on WSCL 89.5

This year, Holy Week begins on April 14th with Easter falling on Sunday April 21st.  Passover begins April 19th and concludes April 27th. WSCL celebrates both faith traditions this year with the following classical music special programs.

Thursday April 18th at 9PM

Rachmaninov's All Night Vigil

This spiritual, haunting Vespers program is an a cappella setting of texts taken from the Russian Orthodox All-Night Vigil ceremony, and a unique opportunity to hear this masterpiece performed in Russia by the Moscow State Chorus.

April 19h at 9PM

Recovering a Music Heritage with James Conlon

Join James Conlon as he leads us on an exploration of music from a lost generation – works forgotten in the shadows for decades. He will illuminate the stories and legacies of composers including Alexander von Zemlinsky, Franz Schreker, Victor Ullmann, and Erwin Schulhoff, in a special program to celebrate this rich, revived musical heritage.

April 21st - Easter Sunday

You can hear special Easter editions of Sing for Joy and Music & The Spoken Word at 6AM, followed by With Heart and Voice at 7AM (and again at 10PM) . Sunday Baroque and Pipedreams will feature Easter Sunday programming as well.

'O Sacred Banquet: Music for Holy Week and Easter

Join Sara Schneider, host and producer of the nationally-syndicated program, Early Music Nowfor O Sacred Banquet: Music for Holy Week and Easter. Mark the season with this one-hour special highlighting music from England, Italy, Spain, and Germany, from the 16th-18th centuries.

Included are a celebratory anthem for Palm Sunday by Orlando Gibbons, Hosanna to the Son of David, a heartfelt meditation on the cross by Palestrina, selections from Bach's Easter Oratorio, and Thomas Crecquillon's exuberant Easter motet Congratulamini mihi. The performers include Stile Antico and the Gabrieli Consort and Players.

A Musical Feast for Passover with Itzhak Perlman

The springtime Jewish holiday of Passover is about liberation from slavery in ancient Egypt. In this one-hour special, superstar violinist Itzhak Perlman shares Passover music from many traditions, plus songs and memories from his childhood in Israel.
