Push to Hike Smoking Age in Delaware

Don Rush

An effort is underway to increase the age to buy tobacco in Delaware to 21.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that the American Lung Association, American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society have met a number of times to convince Delaware lawmakers to raise it from age 18.

They believe this will discourage the younger generation from using tobacco products.

Jonathan Kirch with the American Heart Association told the paper that he believes the legislation should get approval this year.

Newark Democrat Bryan Townsend, who chairs a key state senate committee, told the paper that he supports hiking the age.

The Division of Public Health says around 400 children under the age of 18 wind up smoking on a regular basis.
