Delmarva Public Media Brings Home 13 AP awards

Last weekend, the annual Chesapeake Associated Press Broadcasters Association Awards were held in Ocean City bringing together 27 news organizations from Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia to honor the year’s top achievements in Journalism.

Delmarva Public Media’s news team brought home 13 awards, including the coveted “Best in Show” for the radio division for News Director Don Rush’s piece that investigated the debate surrounding the potential banning of LGBTQ books in local public school libraries.

Don Rush also took home first place honors in Outstanding News Series, Best Use of Sound, Best Serious Feature, and Outstanding Enterprise Reporting.

Peter Solomon won first place for Best Specialty Reporting, while Brian Shane won first place for Best Light Feature and retired Salisbury University professor Michael O’Loughlin won the top honors for Outstanding Editorial and Commentary.

The news team also brought home 4 2nd place awards as well.

Best Specialty Reporting: First, Peter Solomon, WSCL/WSDL, Salisbury, Md., “National Folk Festival”; Second, Bryan Russo, WSCL/WSDL, Salisbury, Md., “Talking Books.”

Outstanding Documentary/In-Depth Reporting: Second, Don Rush, WSCL/WSDL, Salisbury, Md., “Black History Walk in Salisbury.”

Best Enterprise Reporting: First, Don Rush, WSCL/WSDL, Salisbury, Md., “Sussex Development.”

Outstanding Serious Feature: First, Don Rush, WSCL/WSDL, Salisbury, Md., “Harriet Tubman Legacy”; Second, Don Rush, WSCL/WSDL, Salisbury, Md., “Gay Pride Festival.”

Outstanding Light Feature: First, Brian Shane, WSCL/WSDL, Salisbury, Md., “Teaching to Surf."
