First Coronavirus Case on MD Eastern Shore, Carper's Office Reports 7th in Delaware

The first case of the coronavirus has shown up on the Maryland Eastern Shore.

Authorities report that it confirmed a case in Talbot County on Sunday evening.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the patient has been hospitalized after coming into contact with someone in another country who had the disease.

The county is set to declare a local state of emergency.

The paper reports that by Sunday 31 cases have been reported in Maryland.

The disease has caused the statewide shutdown of schools and other facilities in Maryland and Delaware.

Delaware State officials say another case of coronavirus has been confirms.. reaching total of seven so far.

The Wilmington News Journal is also reporting that the new case involves a staff member in Senator Tom Carper’s office.

The staffer has not been identified but his office said they had not been in contact with the Senator.

Officials say they are still looking at how she might have been exposed.

The other cases of the virus have also been linked to the University of Delaware.

Meanwhile, the University of Delaware has extended its spring break that will now runt from March 14th through the 29th.

With the outbreak Delaware officials have opened up drive-thru screening at the Wilmington Riverfront and the Bayview Medical Center in Lewes.

The top state health official Karyl Rattay says that the number of people being tested has risen dramatically since the beginning of the outbreak.

Maryland Casinos to Close

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Gov. Larry Hogan has ordered the closing of Maryland's six casinos, racetracks and simulcast betting facilities in response to the coronavirus.

Hogan issued the emergency order Sunday to close the facilities indefinitely. The closures take effect at midnight Monday.

The governor's office says the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency will work with casinos to facilitate an orderly shutdown of operations.

The governor's office says the closings will remain in effect until a state of emergency has ended or until superseded by other orders. The order does not apply to hotels adjacent to casinos.

Maryland Legislature Wraps Early

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland lawmakers will be focusing on putting finishing touches on the state budget for an early adjournment due to coronavirus.

State legislators are convening Monday with an eye toward adjourning in the middle of the week.

Legislative leaders plan to end the session on Wednesday.

That's almost three weeks earlier than the scheduled April 6 adjournment.

Lawmakers also are prioritizing education measures and bills to help the state contend with the virus.

The General Assembly worked through the weekend in preparation for an early adjournment. Legislative leaders say they plan to reconvene in late May for a special session.
