Maryland Immigration Bill Could Cost Worcester County

creative commons

An immigration measure in Annapolis could cost Worcester County a chunk of change.

The measure would prevent governments from signing contracts to house immigration-related detainees.

WBOC reports that the Worcester County Government Office says that it currently earns around $87 for each detainee per day.

That has brought in $5.1 million to the county jail.

Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis denounced the measure calling a sanctuary bill.

But Toby Perkins with the non-partisan group Indivisible Worcester Maryland told the television that this was about pure racism and that he did not see immigrants as a threat to the community.
