COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — The dean of the engineering school at the University of Maryland has been named the school's next president.

The University System of Maryland announced Wednesday evening that Darryll J. Pines will become the College Park school's 34th president. His appointment is effective July 1.

Pines has spent 25 years on the College Park campus, and he has served as both dean and the Nariman Farvardin Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the Clark School since January 2009.

Pines succeeds retiring president Wallace D. Loh, who will step down in June.
