There’s legislation in the Maryland House that would settle a $580 million lawsuit by Historically Black Colleges and Universities to be paid out over the next 10 years.
The 13-year-old lawsuit claims that the institutions were underfunded while white institutions drained students with money for programs similar to ones at the HBCU’s.
The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the money would go for new programs and investing under-enrolled programs as well as new scholarships and aid assistance.
There would also be funds for recruiting and training teachers.
Last year Governor Larry Hogan offered $200 million over 10 years to settle the suit.
A federal judge found there was a dual and segregated educational system and pushed for mediation.
