Delmarva Congressional Delegation Votes Along Party Lines on Impeachment

cspan

President Donald Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives last night on two articles that included abuse of power and obstruction of congress.

The vote went along party lines with all Republicans opposing impeachment including Eastern Shore Congressman Andy Harris opposing impeachment who called it a partisan stunt.

Harris Statement: "The articles of impeachment passed on a purely partisan vote by the Democrats prove what a partisan stunt this impeachment sham really is. The only abuse of power, as Professor Turley testified last week, is on the part of the House majority pursuing impeachment with no basis in fact. As to obstruction of Congress, even President Obama's own Attorney General Eric Holder refused to answer House subpoenas that he claimed infringed on executive privilege. Where was the outrage then from the Democrats, or their calls for impeachment?"

Republicans  were joined by two Democrats on abuse of power and three on obstruction.

Democrats mustered 230 votes on the first article and 229 on the second.

Rep. Elaine Luria (D-VA)

Democratic Delegation

Democratic Congresswoman Elaine Luria who flipped a Republican held seat in Virginia Beach referred to the oath she took as  a member of the U.S. Navy in casting her vote to impeach.

She said, “Today an oath that gives me resolve to do what is right and not to do what is politically expedient. Resolve to stand with the president at the White House last week. And to stand up to the president in this House today. I ask my colleagues to have the same strength and the same resolve.”

Meanwhile, Maryland Democratic Congressman Jon Sarbanes made a plea to his colleagues, saying “The question is whether the congress will allow the president to place his personal interests above those of his country. I ask my colleagues to join me in answering that question with a resounding no because no one, not even the president is above the law.”
