Governor Larry Hogan wants the state of Maryland to go 100 percent clean electricity by 2040.
His plan is called the Clean and Renewable Energy Standard which will be presented to the state legislature when it meets in January.
WBOC reports that the governor made the announcement after touring the Baltimore Washington Medical Center which has a state-of-the-art combined heat and power system.
It was installed in 2017 with a $464-thousand grant from the Maryland Energy Administration.
Hogan called his plan “a balanced and bold strategy” that commits the state to aggressively address climate change.
He added it would set an example by providing strong environmental leadership.
Meanwhile, the Chesapeake Climate Action Network criticized the plan saying that it relies on the expanded use of fracking gas which it notes produces methane.
