Delaware Public Archives

Efforts are underway to save a historic African American school in Lewes.

The Nassau School also known as Belltown School was one of 80 that were builty by Pierre S. du Pont during the era of Jim Crow.

Community organizations have come together to form the Nassau School Coalition to save the structure.

It is located on land owned by the Delaware Department of Transportation.

DelDOT says it is forming a committee to get recommendations on where the structure might be moved.

Coalition leader Charlotte King told WBOC that there is a lack of historic minority sites in Lewes.

The coalition is made up of the Lewes Historical Society, Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice and community members.
