Lewes Moves Towards Lodging Tax

creative commons

Lewes is inching closer to approving a lodging tax.

Last night the town voted to request a charter change.

If approved it could add 3 percent onto the bills at motels and hotel in the resort.

City Manager Anne Marie Townsend said that the resort will still have to get authority from the state legislature for authority to change the charter.

She added that is at least a year away.

This would make Lewes the first city in Sussex County to impose such a tax.

The state of Delaware already levies an 8% tax on hotels.

Some are concerned that such an additional tax could make the resort more expensive for tourists.

But others say it would help pay for improved amenities.
