MD Comptroller Creates Taskforce on E-Cigarettes

Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot says he is creating a task force to look at the health risks from electronic cigarettes.

The state health department says there have been 38 deaths associated with lung injury related to vaping.

Franchot says little is known about the effects… calling it a Wild West situation.

He said, “Vaping, as everybody knows, has taken the country by storm. What people don’t know is that it is largely unregulated. And, basically we’re selling products to kids, young people, adults without any real knowledge on the customer side as to what the ingredients are and what the possible health risks are.”

The comptroller hopes to put out an “E-Facts” report that will allow Maryland to come up with regulations by the time the state legislature meetings next year.

The Comptroller’s office regulates tobacco in the state of Maryland.
