MIDDLETOWN, Del. (AP) - Authorities in Delaware say a man is dead, three teenagers are unaccounted for and a 16-year-old girl is safe after the car they were in plunged into the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal.

The Delaware State Police says the car went into the water around 9:40 a.m. Sunday. Master Cpl. Michael Austin says the man worked to free the girl, who then called police.

The Delaware News Journal reports Austin in a news conference said the man also tried to rescue the three teenagers. Austin says first responders found the man dead in the canal. He says the 12-year-old and two 16-year-olds boys remain unaccounted for.

Austin says it's unclear why or how the car went into the canal.
