A Look Back on the Lynching History of the Eastern Shore

creative commons

There were some 40 lynchings that took place in Maryland between the 1850's and the early 1930's. The state's Republican governor and Democratic state legislature has begun an truth and reconciliation effort to redress that history. Altough the last such lyncings occurred more than 50 years ago, those on the Eastern Shore still have family who may have been involved or simply watched those events unfold. In part 1, Delmarva Public Radio's Don Rush takes look at the uneasiness that this history brings.

Don Rush is the News Director and Senior Producer of News and Public Affairs at Delmarva Public Media. An award-winning journalist, Don reports major local issues of the day, from sea level rise, to urban development, to the changing demographics of Delmarva.
