North America has seen a major drop in its bird population.

A new study found over the last 50 years three billion have died in the United States and Canada.

WBOC reports that local experts say they have seen a similar trend on Delmarva.

They have told the television station that such species as the black skimmers are disappearing.

Meanwhile, the bald eagle and brown pelican populations have been on the rise.

David Wilson is head of the Maryland Conservation Partnership.

He told the station that there could be an economic downside with many tourists coming to see the region’s birds.

He said preventive measures could include using alternatives to pesticides.
