The Maryland Comptroller’s office has a new study which find that starting school after Labor Day generates significant additional economic activity.

The study found that the net economic impact for the additional six days of summer brought in $58 million dollars.

But the benefit could jump to $115 million for 12 days depending when Labor Day falls on the calendar.

Comptroller Peter Franchot says, “Areas like Inner Harbor, Baltimore City, Deep Creek Lake out in Western Maryland, Ocean City Maryland, they all particularly benefit from the extra one to two weeks in the summer. But, everyone benefits.”

The study was done by Salisbury University’s Business Economic and Community Outreach Network.

Franchot says it demonstrates another beneficial aspect of starting the school term after Labor Day.
