Chincoteague.com

Fifty-seven ponies were sold during the auction at the 94th Annual Chincoteague Pony Swim yesterday.

WBOC reports that the auction brought in $271-thousand from bidders.

On average the ponies sold for around $47-hundred dollars apiece.

Last year just over $228-thousand was raised.

The money will go to the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company which manages the herd.

The fire company says that it costs of up to $40-thousand a year to pay for the veterinarian bills to ensure the health of the herd.

The remaining ponies were taken back across the channel this morning at 10:30 a.m.
