Worcester County health officials say they have confirmed 8 cases of rabies since the beginning of the year.
WBOC reports that the latest was found in a groundhog on Manklin Creek Road in Ocean Pine on July 3rd.
Cats are the number one animal that is most likely to be unvaccinated and at higher risk with exposure to the outdoors.
Others generally effected range from raccoons and foxes to skunks.
The health department says that if a pet comes into contact with a wild animal owners should wear gloves and avoid touching them with bare hands.
There should be no physical contact with the wild animal.
