DOVER, Del. (AP) - Lawmakers have introduced a bill requiring Delaware's state auditor to conduct or contract for an audit of any charter school upon request by legislators or other state officials.
The bill introduced Thursday also makes clear that the auditor cannot charge for such an audit.
The legislation follows state auditor Kathy McGuiness' refusal to conduct an audit requested by Delaware's education secretary of Odyssey Charter School, a Greek-themed school in Wilmington.
McGuiness has said her office has limited oversight over charter schools.
Odyssey is under formal review by Delaware's Department of Education following complaints about the school's governance and finances.
The review was launched after Delaware's Public Integrity Commission concluded that most school board members violated the school's bylaws and the state code of conduct.
