DOVER, Del. (AP) - A package of stricter gun control measures proposed by Democratic lawmakers is getting its first hearing in Delaware's legislature.
Among the bills to be considered by a Senate committee Wednesday is a proposed ban on certain semiautomatic firearms that gun control advocates call "assault weapons."
Another bill bans ammunition magazines holding more than 15 rounds. Anyone who currently legally owns such magazines would have to surrender them to state authorities.
A third bill requires any Delawarean wanting to buy a firearm to first obtain government permission in the form of a state-issued "purchaser card," which would require being fingerprinted and taking an approved firearms training course. Gun dealers, meanwhile, would be required to submit information on every gun sold and every gun purchaser for entry into a new state database.
