DE Rep. Sponsors Bill to Seal Records for Nonviolent Crimes

Those with a history of a nonviolence criminal offense could get a break and allow them to have those offenses sealed.

Legislation by Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE) would make it easier to do so.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that her bill would automatically seal criminal records for nonviolent drug crimes such as marijuana possession without a repeat offense over a year’s time.

For those who were either, acquitted, exonerated or not charged arrest records would be automatically sealed within 180 days.

The News Journal reports that supporters say that currently previous offenses can follow people for the rest of their lives no matter how long ago they were committed.

In short, they argue that once their debt to society is paid their lives should not be permanently hindered by the offense.
