Laurel Schools Closed, Tornado Upgraded to EF 2

The Laurel School District is closed today in the aftermath of the tornado that hit the area on Monday.

The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down in Laurel on Monday.

It took off rooftops scattering debris and leaving one injured.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that it touched down at around 3:38 a.m. and traveled just over six miles in Seaford.

Chip Guy with Sussex County said that there was a large path of damage along Route 9 with a number of homes damaged by the tornado.

The tornado has now been upgraded from an EF 1 to EF 2.

Guy told the paper that an adult male had suffered minor injuries and was taken to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford.

Sussex Country did some of heavy rains but officials say there was not much flooding.

By yesterday afternoon the area saw winds of up to 40 mph.

Roads Affected

The Delaware Department of Transportation says there were a number of roads effected by the storm.

WBOC reports that the department said the Airport Road from Old Hickory Road to Dogwood Road was closed yesterday.

US Route 13 saw one lane closure from Boyce Road to Discount Land Road for a few days.

And Camp Road from Seaford to Discount Road was also closed indefinitely.
