Expanding DNA Testing to those Arrested in Delaware

Delaware Republicans want to expand the requirement for DNA testing to those arrested for certain crimes.

Currently, the law only requires testing after a person is convicted of a violent felony, sexual offense or an offense involving a child or vulnerable adult.

House Minority Whip Tim Dukes dismissed concerns about privacy saying that it is aimed at public safety.

Jeff Harvath with the Delaware Police Chiefs Council told WBOC that this would fill in the gap from unsolved crimes.

But one defense attorney said it should be noted that defendants in criminal cases are considered innocent until proven guilty.

Attorney Zachary George told the television station that there are concerns about how it might be used against them during a preliminary hearing.
