Civil Rights Groups Demand Input into Commission on Hummers Parade

official photo

The Delaware Hispanic Commission and the local NAACP want to be involved in choosing a seven member committee that is to look into the Hummer’s parade that took place in Middletown.

Commission chair Charito Calvachi-Mateyko said she never again wanted to see “ the manifestation of hate” that was on display during the New Year’s event.

In addition, they say they want input into the recommendations for the town council.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that Scott Saunders, president of the local NAACP chapter, said the mayor and the council should not be the final decision maker on who is chosen for the committee.

The parade began as a parody of the Mardi Gras-like Mummers Parade in Philadelphia.

It drew sharp criticism with a float that showed children in cages supposedly detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs agents.

Calvachi-Mateyko also does translation work for Delmarva Public Radio.
